Gavin Edwards Interview

A Chat With Singer Gavin Edwards

The Voice SA runner-up, Gavin Edwards, just released his much anticipated album, Silver Skies. His touching story, his talent and his passion earned him the title of runner-up on the show. Now, having signed a lucrative deal with Universal Music South Africa, Gavin looks forward to reaching the masses with his new, original music as well as some personal, familiar favourites.

Dirty Pink City caught up with the man behind the music:

Hi Gavin, thank you for chatting to DPC – Great pleasure for me!

Thank you so much DPC for the interview, it really means the world to me and that you want to find out about me and my plans; its really kind of you. Hope that I’ve given you all the answers below and if you need anything else, please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks guys!

Awesome! You just released your debut album – Congrats! How has it been received so far?

So far the response has been amazing, everyone is loving the upbeat vibe of the album and loving the songs and a lot of amazing feedback about the duet Say Something with Karlien as well. Just heard that 3 of the songs off the album are in The Top 20 on Radio Laeveld which they haven’t had before, Sparks is No.1 for the second week running. It is just been so unbelievably incredible, just so proud.

So, what is the title, Silver Skies, about and does the album have a theme throughout?

One of the tracks on the album is called Silver Skies and is about how the place I am in right now is exactly where I’m meant to be and how I feel just perfect in it, but will always also be trying for silver skies…

Who worked with you on this album?

The producer was Denholm Harding; his team was JP from B-Sharp Studios and Harshn Reddy and I got Karlien Van Jaarsveld to sing on Say Something with me. That was the team, all of us completed the album in 3 and a half weeks.

Sounds great! So, obviously an awesome decision, but why did you decide to take part in The Voice SA in the first place?

I knew that The Voice focused on the artist and helping develop the artist instead of trying to change them. Plus I had given up drinking about 3  months before, so I was gonna give it my all, this time sober and all.

Congratulations on being the runner-up of the first season! How did this change your career and / or day-to-day life?

It changed everything, for the better. I signed to Universal Records and recorded and released my debut album which took a life time, lol. Been doing a lot of gigs and as well doing Oppiepad Tour where I visit radio stations around SA to sell my album. The really amazing thing is that it has given me the resources to put a tour together and it immediately gets interest and support which as artist or a band in SA, the hard thing is to get a nation wide audience. We all just want to play our music to everyone and The Voice opened up those doors.

Gavin Edwards InterviewHow was it working with Bobby? And what was the best advice give to you while participating?

Bobby was so amazing to work with he was so involved with his whole #TeamBobby from word go. His best advise for me was to be confident with being myself on stage, I would always feel I wasn’t doing enough by moving around and working every bit of the stage but Bobby would reassure me that I must focus on singing with every bit of emotion and make sure the song gets the full attention and not the stage. Plus he allowed me to just be myself which after years of trying to be perfect on stage, it was exactly what I needed in a coach.

So, Bobby is an inspiration locally, but who inspires you on the global music scene?

Ryan Tedder from One Republic as a singer and songwriter, he is continually pushing himself and his songs. Just the same as Sia.

What is your preferred genre?

The exact genre my album is Pop/Rock.

Are you touring this summer? If so, where can we catch you live?

I’ll be touring all summer long and I’ll be trying to get all over. I’ve got shows in Knysna, George, Langebaan, Mossel Bay and many more. Check out for updates and tour schedule please. Gavin Edwards Interview

Can we listen to your music online, and/or buy it? Please share a link if you have.

My Album “Silver Skies” is on iTunes and Google Play and in Musicas as well I’m driving around SA on my #OppiePad tour with my guitar and a boot full of albums going to as many towns to sell my CD to as many people as I can.

Finally, what can we expect from you in 2017?

I am making the transition from cover act to original artist and that is my goal: Just to be playing original shows from 2017 and playing as many places all over SA.
