An Interview With Riot Beer
It’s almost time for the Stellenbosch Craft Beer Festival at the Jan Marais Nature Reserve. It promises to be a fun-filled day of great beer, top-notch music and some of the best food trucks around.
I had a quick chat with one of the breweries, Riot Beer, who will be at the fest. Here is what they said about the event:
Hi, thanks for the chat! Please give me a short description of the different craft beers you offer at your brewery.
We love to experiment and are always brewing something new and exciting, but we do have 3 mainline beers that we brew year round,
- SESSION: Lager-Ale Hybrid (essentially a Kölsch). A crisp light easy drinking beer. Thirst quenching.
- VALVE: IPA. We turned the hops way up on this one…striking a balance between malt & bold hoppy bitterness. Expect guava, litchi upfront followed by a grapefruit bitterness.
- VINTAGE RANGE – Vintage is rotating small batches of barrel aged beer that will change from release to release. A vintage cannot be repeated, only remembered.
1st batch released was Vintage #001, A Hybrid Amber Ale aged in a Brandy barrel for 6 months. It has a delightful toffee caramel backbone and finishes with a port-like bang!
‘‘As always our principles remain, full flavour, unapologetic, and just a little bit different…’’ – Marc Fourie, Head Brewer
Cool! So, which is the most popular one?
They are all popular for different reasons. Session is very popular with people just getting into craft, learning the ropes and wanting something flavourful but not too overwhelming.
Valve is a huge hit with Hops Heads, people that are IPA drinkers tend to really enjoy this beer. Valve has won gold for The National Beer Trophy 2016 & 2017.
The Vintage range is for those that like something new, exciting, and definitely different.
With so many beers on tap at the festival, why should we come look for you, what makes you different?
Besides from the fantastic beer we produce, we are an incredibly funny and upbeat crew. We always have knowledgably staff serving, in fact our brewer will be in attendance himself, so please stop by and have a chat; we will answer every and any question you have as best we can! J
Where can we follow you online:
If not at the festival, where can we come taste your beers?
We are in bottle and on tap at many fine establishments in & around Cape Town. We also attend many events in both Cape Town & JHB. If you’re looking for somewhere to grab a fresh print or a couple bottles of Riot, please email us at email@example.com and we will send you the stockists closest to you.
Lastly, please complete this for us:
Craft beer is…Life less ordinary, and a life more flavourful!
