Take Part In Travelstart’s Paper Jet Challenge!
In celebration of Youth Month, Travelstart challenges you to get in touch with your inner child by taking part in the Paper Jet Challenge and #BeAKidAgain
Like many of you, my favourite type of holiday is a beach holiday. I grew up about 40 minutes from the nearest beach and many weekends were spent having full-day long picnics on the white sand, swimming and playing soccer or throwing frisbee with my family.
One of my favourite childhood memories is December holidays in Struisbaai, a beautiful small coastal town about 2 hours and 30 minutes’ drive from Cape Town. My dad would rent us a little holiday home and every year we would pack up and take the trip south-east.
Back then, everything needed to go along on the holiday – from my favourite teddy and Harry Potter books to a couple of board games and puzzles. My mom would make us a Christmas fruit cake months in advance for the holiday and my dad would make sure the camera was packed.
Our days in Struisbaai were trouble-free and spent bathing in the sun, swimming in the lukewarm water and eating watermelon pieces on the golden beach. There was nothing better than spending hours on our boogie boards (yeah remember those!?), having a beautiful summer Christmas and going for milkshakes at the small cafe on the beach.
After a long day in the water, my mom would make us fresh snacks before dinner, my sister and I would take a walk back to the beach to watch the sunset and at the end of every day, we would pass out on our beds, tired but just so happy.
Sometimes we explored the area around Struisbaai and went on day-drives to Cape Agulhas and Arniston. Cape Agulhas is the geographic southern tip of the African continent and the beginning of the dividing line between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Every year we would visit the lighthouse in this small town and have the most delicious cheesecake in their little restaurant.
Thinking back, those days were sunny and happy and I made some of my favourite memories as a kid on that beach.
A while ago, I took the trip back to my favourite childhood holiday destination and it brought back all those priceless memories!
Do you remember your favourite things as a kid?
Many years later, I would make two of my ultimate beach holiday dreams come true. The first one was visiting Bali for 3 glorious weeks and the second was going on a road trip to Mozambique! One of my next dream destinations is Zanzibar!
