Blood Brothers 2018 coming to Cape Town and Pretoria
This September, the 4th annual Blood Brothers return to the stage with the goal of rock ’n rolling against cancer. 2018’s line-up for South Africa’s supergroup has been carefully selected, with old favourites being joined by some of the country’s most exciting, young performers.
It is only with persistence, that our country’s rock heroes together with The Vrede Foundation, will conquer this fight and be victorious in their quest to generate awareness regarding cancer and raise funds to provide financial aid to young South Africans with cancer. Unite with the multitude of warriors, and buy your tickets TODAY!
I had a quick chat with Hanu De Jong, who is part of the Blood Brothers for a second time, to talk about the event:
First of all, what are you currently busy with except for Blood Brothers 2018? I see The Narrow has been quite busy recently?
Yeah, I tour with The Narrow every year and we are still promoting our new album “Dream of Perelandra”. I’ve also got some solo and colab projects on the go right now and hope to have something out soon.
Awesome! So, now in its fourth year, and you being back for a second year, how do you think this year’s event will be different to the previous events?
Every year brings different artists and different approaches to songs and the entire creative process. Also, being artists, we don’t like doing things the same way twice! So, the entire show will be different I think.
And this year there will be two shows again! Will all of you be travelling together between Pretoria and Cape Town, and will you be doing the exact same show in both cities?
These shows take a lot of logistic planning and rehearsal time, so we’re keeping them exactly the same for both shows. Members of the band and crew will be coming from all over South Africa, so I doubt we will be travelling together. But we will have few beers before and after the shows that’s for sure!
The event is held annually in support of the Vrede Foundation. Can you tell us a little bit about the cause and why this is important to you?
Herman was a great guy and I got to know him very well before cancer took him. The Vrede Foundation is an initiative inspired by his journey and I will do what I can to help others with similar challenges in their lives.
It’s really an amazing foundation! So, I’m interested in the setup of the show. Who decides on which songs to add to the set and who will be performing what?
Us vocalists are the divas of the show and we get to pick our own tunes! We also have a little WhatsApp group where we chat and chum up for colab songs, etc.
Oh cool! And when and where do you rehearse for the show? And is it difficult to get everyone together? I mean, you stay in New Zealand?
The band rehearses in Midrand and where-ever they can in Gauteng. I land earlier in September and will have a rehearsal or two with everyone before the shows.
Which other artist/s are you most excited about working with?
I’ve never met the guy but I’m chuffed to perform with Ard. Great songwriter and some of his tunes were the soundtrack to my student years.
He is really fantastic! Every year the group covers many famous songs, if it is not too much of a secret, can you share one or two of tracks that you guys are performing this year or even artists you are covering?
Can’t tell you! All I’ll say is mine is heavy and very mosh-able 🙂
Oh no! Okay, well, will the group record a new song or anthem this year? If so, what can we expect?
Yup, it’s a great little tune. Can’t say much now but it is very catchy and way different from the one I wrote for Blood Brothers last year.
What song from The Narrow can we listen to in preparation for the show and to get us hyped up? Please share a link!
All of them!! hehehe… maybe this one:
Lastly, what’s in store for The Narrow for the rest of the year and 2019?
We are touring Gauteng and Cape Town in September and October this year. Next year has big things planned but we are still nutting out the details. Follow us here.
