Laudo Liebenberg Interview

Blood Brothers 2018 coming to Cape Town and Pretoria

It’s almost here! The 4th annual Blood Brothers return to the stage with the goal of rock ’n rolling against cancer. 2018’s line-up for South Africa’s supergroup has been carefully selected, with old favourites being joined by some of the country’s most exciting, young performers.

It is only with persistence, that our country’s rock heroes together with The Vrede Foundation, will conquer this fight and be victorious in their quest to generate awareness regarding cancer and raise funds to provide financial aid to young South Africans with cancer. Unite with the multitude of warriors, and buy your tickets TODAY!

I had a quick chat with Laudo Liebenberg, who is part of the Blood Brothers for the first time this year, to talk about the event:

First of all, what are you currently busy with except for Blood Brothers 2018? I see aKING has been busy the past couple of months?

aKING is currently in studio recording new songs. We have not been playing as much in the last couple of years, but we’re very excited to bring out new music. I’m also acting in a TV-series that just started shooting and it’s great to mix up creative mediums.

That’s awesome! Looking forward to the new music! So, now in its fourth year, and it being your first year, how do you think this year will be different to the previous Blood Brothers events?

I’m very excited to be a part of this year’s Blood Brothers team. There are some fresh faces and a lot of great originals and covers on the set list. The interaction and collaboration of these artists are going to be something special this year.

And this year there will be two shows again! Will all of you be travelling together between Joburg and Cape Town, and will you be doing the exact same show in both cities?

We will be travelling together and play the same show for both cities’ audiences. Don’t want people to miss out on this well-crafted super show.

Absolutely! So, the event is held annually in support of the Vrede Foundation. Can you tell us a little bit about the cause and why this is important to you?

Vrede Foundation is for cancer awareness among young people! It is close to my heart, because we lost a dear friend to cancer at the age of 28. Herman Pretorius! was the man who started this foundation alongside his brother Henre. We really believe that a lot of young people suffering from cancer will benefit from this campaign and that the awareness will further the research and support to save lives.

I’m interested in the setup of the show. Who decides on which songs to add to the set and who will be performing what?

It’s a collective effort, but obviously people want to hear their favorites. It’s important to figure out how everyone can collaborate on each other’s songs as well as the covers chosen.

When and where do you rehearse for the show? And is it difficult to get everyone together?

There is a solid and talented band that will be playing on every song, then the vocalists will switch and perform either solo or alongside each other depending on the choices made. It is a difficult production to get everyone together and create enough time to practice and feel it out. The producers on this event have done an incredible job on sorting out schedules in advance to accommodation every artist.

Which other artist/s are you most excited about working with?

All of them. a lot of the artists I’ve performed with in the past, but the dynamic of this show is totally different to anything I’ve done before so I can’t wait to share the stage with the whole team!

Every year the group covers many famous songs, if it is not too much of a secret, can you share one or two of tracks that you guys are performing this year or even artists you are covering?

I’ll be doing covers from ‘The Clash’ and ‘The Strokes’.

So, will the group record a new song or anthem this year? If so, what can we expect?

Yes, it is a killer song, diverse and rocking with some amazing performances from all the artists involved.

What song from aKING can we listen to in preparation for the show and to get us hyped up?

I guess ‘the dance’ – it was our first single ever.

Finally, what’s in store for AKING for the rest of the year and 2019?

Writing and recording more music to release next year.
