A quick chat with Standeaven Brewery
It’s that time again! The Capital Craft Beer Festival is almost here! This year, on Saturday 16 June 2018, the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens will once again play host to the popular festival. Capital Craft Beer Festival has established itself as an indispensable part of the Pretoria social calendar not to be missed. The event sets the bar for the industry with over 40 brewers present, top local entertainment available and a variety of food to choose from.
I caught up with one of the breweries, Staneaven Brewery, to chat about the festival and their range of craft beers:
First of all, I have to ask: are Watermelon Lager, Rascal Sour Cherry Ginger, Chin Chin Red Rye Ale and White Wash Peach IPA all real beers on tap at your brewery? Sounds delicious and interesting!
Yes, these are all beers that we make or have made in the past, a few of them were beers created specifically to showcase something different and out of the norm at a festival. A few of them have become standard offerings from the brewery, we enjoy the freedom of being a smaller brewery and being able to experiment and bring brews to the market place that wouldn’t be the everyone’s idea of just exactly what beer should be.
How did the The Standeaven Brewery originate; Can you share a little bit of history with me?
The Standeaven brewery originated on our farm in KwaZulu-Natal, after a few years of travelling abroad and sampling what there was on the world stage, I decided to head back home to the country I love and make a proper go of things. At first, I actually ran an artisan bakery, it was really well supported and definitely paid my bills for a few years, but the demanding hours and time consuming process eventually had me looking at other opportunities around us and from there I ended up with beer. So, much has changed from then with the brewery being well established now and us also having a still in operation where we distill our own gin for one of our products that originated at a party on our front lawn, gin and tonic on tap and the rest is history….
That sounds amazing! Please give me a short description of the different craft beers you offer at your brewery.
We offer a wide range of beers at our brewery, basically we would like to think we have something for everyone. Be it an ale, lager or fruit beer, there is always a wide range of beers available.
Which is the most popular one?
That’s a hard one. Often things change depending on the people, weather or situation. You won’t find everyone drinking dark stronger beers early in the day, where as you would on a cold evening. We are just happy that we have been going since 2012 and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
With so many beers on tap at the festival, why should we come try your beers; What makes you different?
We will have our beers and out G&T on tap at the festival this year, come try our beers or even our gin. Let us introduce you to a small family operation that are passionate about our products! Who knows, you might just find something that you enjoy!
You sold the most beers at the festival in 2015! Are you going to do it again this year?
We obviously would love to sell the most product as would any brewery involved, although over the years things have changed, now we most look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones and getting the time to interact with everyone. There is nothing better then being able to see a persons reaction when they try your product for the first time especially if they have found something they enjoy.
