Mango Groove at MIX FEST 2019
“There seems to be a big buzz around this brand new festival, and Mix FM is bringing a fantastic energy to the whole event” – Claire Johnston
Mix 93.8 FM will be hosting the first-ever MIX FEST on 28 and 29 September 2019 at Cradle Moon Game Lodge, in the historical Cradle of Humankind, Muldersdrift. The event will host an extraordinary lineup, including legendary Mango Groove, Springbok Nude Girls and Watershed, as well as multiple bars and a pop-up food market. Be sure to get your hands on some tickets before they sell out!
I caught up with lead singer Claire Johnston from Mango Groove to chat about the event and what they have been up to lately.
You’ve had quite a few shows at exciting events this year. Any standout shows?
Yes, several. In particular, our three sold-out shows at the Teatro at Montecasino in Jozi were very special, as they were the celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the release of the very first Mango Groove album. We’ve been in a celebratory mood ever since!
That’s incredible! I was just reading about you the other day and realised you’ve been performing for over 30 years! That’s just amazing. What do you think is the recipe for longevity as a band?
We are amazed too! And utterly grateful, because it is the public who makes it possible for us to have had such a long and rewarding journey. I guess the recipe has something to do with loving what we do, taking enough breaks to ensure that you don’t take things for granted and get stale, as well as that aforementioned support from the public.
Great advice. So, are you currently working on anything new?
We’re looking at writing a new song, something fun that sums up how we are feeling right now in honour of our 34th year in the industry, the 30th anniversary of the release of the first album and our SAMA Lifetime Achievement award.
Exciting! You’re also on the lineup for the first ever MIX FEST. What do you think is going to set this event apart from other festivals in South Africa?
There seems to be a big buzz around this brand new festival, and Mix FM is bringing a fantastic energy to the whole event, not to mention great organisational skills. We are really thrilled and honoured to be a part of it and are counting the days already. I think we are all in for a treat, one that is bound to become a favourite on people’s calendars.
And this is an especially great lineup! Any of the other bands or artists you’re really keen to see?
Isn’t it just!! Across all us Mangoes, there is a band for all of us on the lineup. I am especially excited to see Desmond and the Tutus, Shortstraw and Rubber Duc.
Please share a link to one of your songs you think would give people a taste of what to expect at MIX FEST 2019.
Can I pick two, please? One going back to 1989 and the other to 2017…
Oh, that’s just so special! Lastly, is there anything still on Mango Groove’s to-do list? Any big plans?
Yes! We still have lots of big dreams. New music, obviously, plus we’re looking at a fairly epic Mango Groove documentary, as well as a Mango Groove movie. We’ll definitely keep you posted.
I can’t wait!
