A Quick Look Back At Endless Daze

Endless Daze, now in its third year, took place during the first weekend in November. I wasn’t able to attend the previous two editions, so I can only measure the event by what I experienced this year.

First of all, the organisers struck gold with the venue. Silverstroom, a seaside resort along the West Coast, is the perfect spot for a gathering of this size. It offers neat camping spots, a golden beach and plenty of lookout spots for sunset gazing. A big bonus is that the road to the music from Cape Town is a mere 45 minutes long.

Endless Daze, presented by Psych Night and Vans, has a retro 60s feel to it – at least how I think most of us imagine it the 60s to have been, fashion and all. The festival is a smoothly-curated, intimate event, with a 2500-person capacity, of mostly Capetonians looking to escape the city for a weekend of good company and a large dose of artful indie and soulful synths. It reminded me of how now bigger festivals used to be back in the day.

A festival-goer sums up nicely on Facebook what makes Endless Daze special: “…What an intimate and friendly event. Left after meeting so many lovely new people, with a happy heart, enough sleep and a full tummy. Cannot wait for next year.

There is an atmosphere of companionship and inclusiveness. Not only do you run into old friends, but you also keep bumping into the same new faces, leading to everyone partying together and making new friends – the big bonus of a smaller festival!

I was happy to learn about the beach cleanup, in partnership with the Beach Co-op, which took place on Saturday morning. Among other things, the group managed to pick up 1142 cooldrink lids, 412 earbuds and 403 individual sweet wrappers! Amazing!

The organisers also stepped up by addressing the plastic cup debate that has been going on, by charging a deposit of R10 should you like to have a plastic cup instead of a paper one. Small, but valuable steps!

For those seeking a few face-melting acts, the lineup was made up of a few incredible local and international artists and bands. Music started early and ended late, offering a full day of tunes. Highlights include the talented A.S Fanning on the smaller tent-stage, and the dreamy Medicine Boy, the incredible Kidofdoom, Runaway Nuns, Black Lung and Morena Leraba on the main stage.

For those needing to refuel, a few local food vendors, put together by Neighbourgoods Market Cape Town, offered tasty cuisine, while the efficient bars had a good (and affordable!) variety of beverages, including kombucha!

With smaller events, security is also able to keep a closer eye on the venue. Not once did I feel like I had to stress about my belongings.

Endless Daze is on the rise as a newly anticipated annual music event. Of course, if you sit down and really think about the weekend, you will eventually find areas to improve on, as writer Jenna Dreisenstock points out in her piece about the festival: Endless Daze: An in Depth Look Into One of South Africa’s Most Unique Festivals. But organising and coordinating any event, even of this size, is an immense task. In my opinion, as young as Endless Daze is, they deserve all the credit and more. And lest we forget why we went in the first place: to have a fun, careless weekend and to enjoy the music.

Although on the one hand I hope that this festival stays as small and intimate as it currently is, I also hope to see it evolve and succeed for many years to come.

For those who haven’t attended, be sure not to miss the event next year. Keep an eye on http://endlessdazefest.com/ for updates.
