The Hottest New Asian Restaurant in Cape Town
Ben Wei Opens in Cape Town
Every now and then a new restaurant opens in the Mother City that instantly draws my attention; an eatery that is easy-going, but ever so stylish with amazing food and a great atmosphere. That is Ben Wei.
Ben Wei recently opened its doors at the trendy Wembley Square in Cape Town. This exciting new eatery offers a variety of sushi, delicious Thai curies and authentic Chinese dishes among other unique and creative Asian meals.
Chef Jim Dai and entrepreneur Ian McMahon (owner of the annual MCQP and Crew Bar in Cape Town) have opened Ben Wei at the beginning of February and the intimate space is already the new talk of the town. I was recently invited to try it out.
Upon arrival I was greeted by the friendly staff and was shown to a charming table in the “courtyard”.
The broad menu includes Banting and vegetarian options to go along with a wide range of selected wines and imported beers from Thailand, China or Japan – I highly recommend you try some of them!
We started off the evening with crab spring rolls and the best tuna tataki (spiced and seared tuna) I’ve ever tasted, followed by a delicious bowl of Miso soup – Be aware you won’t be able to put your spoon down with this delicious dish!
Of course sushi was next on the menu. With an extensive range to choose from, it’s better to order two or even three plates! But more on that later.
I got served the Thai Green Curry as the main dish of the night. The curry was cooked to perfection with crisp, fresh veg in a rich, coconut-based cream sauce.
To end of, I indulged in deep fried ice cream – A treat you won’t be able to resist!
The Atmosphere & Interior
I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere. From the moment you walk into the intimate space you feel at home – It’s vibey, but still cosy and personal. Ben Wei is stylishly decorated with fresh colours, and sophisticated patterns that liven up the space – day and night.
The Best Sushi in Cape Town
Like many Capetonians, I am a big lover of sushi. Cape Town has a multitude of sushi restaurants, but very few offer that perfect plate! At last, at Ben Wei I found my match. Not only do they offer a wide range of the best rolled pieces, but they also have an exciting mixture to choose from, including a Banting Platter – So, you can still enjoy your favourites without compromising on your diet. The Banting Platter consists of 4 pieces of salmon, tuna and avo bamboo roll, 4 pieces slimmer’s rice-free maki and 4 pieces of banting salmon roses.
The menu is very reasonably priced which will also contribute to Ben Wei being an instant hit! It is recommended to make a booking at this upcoming popular spot. Ben Wei is open Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner.
