An Interview With Dan Patlansky

Dan Patlansky Releases Perfection Kills

‘Perfection Kills’ is the brand new, ninth release from South African blues-rock guitarist, songwriter and vocalist, Dan Patlansky.

With a slightly dirtier, rougher tone, the new album is a small step in a different sound direction, but contains some of Patlansky’s best work to date with multiple top-class tracks. His raspy voice contributes to a consistently solid blues-rock album, perhaps with a stronger focus on rock this time, amplified by heavy guitar riffs, electric piano and bass. Perfection Kills has a more organic feel compared to some of his other work, and most of the clever lyrics are about Patlansky’s personal experiences, making this a release that his fans will love. A full-rounded, nearly perfectly assembled piece of work, filled with both hyper energy and calm, it’s hard to believe that he will be able to improve on this, but with Patlansky anything is possible.

The album, released worldwide on the 2nd of February 2018, is the follow-up to his critically acclaimed ‘Introvertigo’, released in 2016, which was voted #1 Blues Rock Album in the world by Blues Rock Review USA.

Congratulations on the new album, Perfection Kills – your 9th! This must be an extremely busy period coming up. What’s in store for the next couple of weeks/months?

Thanks. Currently we are rehearsing the new live set. Then I am going to Germany and the UK to tour the album for 3 weeks, after which I return and we tour the album in South Africa. Can’t wait.

You’ve decided to record this album at Scherzo Productions, because you wanted this one to sound different from your last two albums. Why did you decide on a new sound and how else is it different from your previous work?

I wanted an album that was more raw and organic sounding. Something that represented us live. The studio I chose was perfect for that. I think it has the same core as previous records, heavy focus on songs. Just packaged differently.

Oh and you produced the album yourself! Well done on that too. Why did you decide to do it?

I learned so much from working with Theo and I wanted a particular sound I had in my head, which is a slightly different sound to Theo’s sound. So I thought I better produce it because it’s almost impossible to explain to someone.

You’ve said about the album: “Perfection Kills is all about my vision of making a record that still makes the song writing a priority as in the past.” So, were all the tracks written by yourself, and does the title play a bit around the process of writing that perfect song?

The title is solely about the production and recording process. I wrote all the songs myself. Expect 4 of them were co-written by Theo.

You’ve also said that you wanted this album to sound very close to what it would sound like live, what goes into making an album that’s so close to, let’s say, the real thing? And how long did it take to get it there?

It’s fairly easy if you have the right mind set. 80% of it was tracked live in the studio to capture the feel. We recorded the album in 10 days. So there wasn’t enough time to overthink things.

What is your personal favourite track on the new album? And which do you think will be a crowd favourite?

Good question. Regarding crowd favourite, I have no idea what will resonate the best with the crowds. My personal favorite is Johnny.

You are currently touring in Europe. Just briefly, where will you be performing and why did you decide on a European tour first?

No particular reason, it’s just how the dates naturally came about. The good news is by the time we return the songs will be tight and sounding great. We do Germany and the UK on this tour.

Lastly, what is it that you still want to accomplish, since you’ve had so much success in your career already?

Wow, so much more still. I think growing my profile as an artist in Europe and UK is still a top priority, as well as doing the same in SA. As a musician there is still so much to achieve on my instrument and voice.
