ERDINGER Weissbräu at Capital Craft Beer Festival
A quick chat with ERDINGER Weissbräu
It’s that time again! The Capital Craft Beer Festival is almost here! This year, on Saturday 16 June 2018, the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens will once again play host to the popular festival. Capital Craft Beer Festival has established itself as an indispensable part of the Pretoria social calendar not to be missed. The event sets the bar for the industry with over 40 brewers present, top local entertainment available and a variety of food to choose from.
I caught up with one of the breweries at the festival, ERDINGER Weissbräu, to chat about the event and their range of craft beers:
You have been around since 1886. Just briefly, please tell us a bit about the history behind the brewery?
The beginnings of ERDINGER Weissbräu date back to 1886, the year in which construction of a wheat beer brewery in the Bavarian town of Erding was first officially recorded. After several changes in ownership, the General Manager at the time, Franz Brombach, was given the chance to buy the brewery in 1935. The brewery’s current owner, Werner Brombach, joined his father’s company in 1965 when annual output was at 40,000 hl, and took over sole responsibility as owner after his father’s death in 1975. With his entrepreneurial vision and policy of small successive steps, he steadily developed the brewery into the global market leader. In 1977, output had already reached 225,000 hl and 13 years later in 1990 the magic 1-million hectoliter mark was passed for the first time. Thanks to Werner Brombach’s unswerving commitment to quality and consistent brand strategy, the brewery continues to grow. Today, around 1.76 million hl (2017) of wheat beer leave the brewery every year.
Exports began to take off in the 1980s, as the wheat beer specialties became increasingly popular in countries such as Italy, the UK and Spain. Important future markets such as China and Russia were added in the 1990s. Today ERDINGER exports to over 90 countries, is the global market leader and Germany’s largest family-owned wheat beer brewery.
Which is the most popular one and the one we should definitely try?
Our ERDINGER Weissbier with fine yeast is the ultimate premium wheat beer. It is brewed according to a traditional recipe and in strict accordance with the Bavarian Purity Law. The strength of this classic wheat beer lies in the harmonious balance it achieves between the various aromas. Gently spicy wheat and yeast aromas blend with mildly bitter hops. The invigorating carbon dioxide ensures its typical liveliness. It is a premium beer whose full-bodied yet elegant character leaves a lasting impression of ultimate Bavarian enjoyment.
On your website it says your beer “personifies Bavarian lifestyle and enjoyment”. That sounds fancy! 🙂 Can you elaborate a bit on this?
You can taste Bavaria – with a glass of ERDINGER Weissbier. Then you’ll know what traditional brewing without gimmicks is capable of. The recipe is over 130 years old, unchanged and closely guarded – a true treasure. What’s no secret though is the Bavarians’ love of life. Together with their passion for a cozy and jovial atmosphere, this has established Bavaria’s reputation for hospitality – something which ERDINGER Weißbräu has long adopted itself.
ERDINGER Weissbräu is a messenger of Bavarian joie de vivre worldwide. Festivals have a long tradition in Bavaria. They are a place to meet and make friends, as well as to enjoy life, good food and, of course, outstanding beer. There are Oktoberfest events with ERDINGER in Dublin/Irland, London/Great Britain, Zurich/Switzerland, Sao Paulo/Brasil, Bogota/Columbia, Zinzinnati/USA, Hongkong and Mumbai/India – just to name a few. Their success is based on being original and authentic Bavarian festivals. That includes beer garden tables, traditional decorations, beer steins, waitresses dressed in traditional Bavarian costumes, original Oktoberfest bands that keep things lively, typical food and last but not least the ERDINGER what beer specialties.
With so many beers at the Capital Craft Beer Festival, why should we definitely make a stop at ERDINGER?
ERDINGER Weissbräu makes no compromises when it comes to the taste of our beer and the quality of its ingredients. We cherish traditional brewing skills and have a true passion for wheat beer: ERDINGER Weissbräu allows its top-fermenting specialty to mature in the bottle in the traditional manner, just like champagne. Moreover: True to its motto “Beer needs Roots”, the brewery sees no reason to brew anywhere else than at its home base in Erding. Every single bottle of ERDINGER Weissbier is brewed in Erding. This is the only way to ensure quality and flavor.
