Blood Brothers 2018 coming to Cape Town and Pretoria

This September, the 4th annual Blood Brothers return to the stage with the goal of rock ’n rolling against cancer. 2018’s line-up for South Africa’s supergroup has been carefully selected, with old favourites being joined by some of the country’s most exciting, young performers.

Unite with the multitude of warriors, and buy your tickets TODAY!

I had a quick chat with Francois van Coke, who is part of the Blood Brothers again this year, to talk about the event:

First of all, what are you currently busy with except for BB 2018? I see Francois en Vriende is another big one coming up!

Yeah. Very excited for BB 2018, but before that I am doing Francois van Coke en Vriende in Pretoria and it is the biggest show I have ever done as a solo artist, so very excited about that. I am also working on a secret project that will be revealed on the 8th of October.

Looking forward! Now in its fourth year, and you being a veteran, how do you think this year will be different to the previous events?

Every year is different, because the band changes. This year we have Laudo Liebenberg, Ard Matthews and Adele Nqeto for the first time. That will bring a seriously different dynamic to the party. I think the show will be a little bit less straight forward rock ‘n roll this year.

And this year there will be two shows again! Will all of you be travelling together between Joburg and Cape Town, and will you be doing the exact same show in both cities?

It will be the same show in both cities. Everyone is travelling for both. Very stoked to be able to do it in CT again. Let’s hope the people come out and support the cause and listen to us play.

Absolutely! The event is held annually in support of the Vrede Foundation. Can you tell us a little bit about the cause and why this is important to you?

Vrede Foundations is a non-profit organisation that help young people with cancer. It was started in 2009 when Henre Pretorius’ brother Herman was diagnosed. I was good friends with Herman and we played music together in high school. I have been involved with various projects with Vrede Foundation since the start and feel very strong about the cause.

I’m interested in the setup of the show. Who decides on which songs to add to the set and who will be performing what?

Chris van der Walt is the band leader and has the last say, I guess. All of the singers decide on the 6/7 tracks we want to do, but it is a discussion between members and then we also decide on the collaborations as we move forward. Some of those things only get figured out on the day.

So, when and where do you rehearse for the show? And is it difficult to get everyone together?

The backbone of the band is all in Gauteng, so they have started rehearsing already. Some of us fall in at a later stage and then we put in some hard graft the day or 2 before the show.

Which other artist/s are you most excited about working with?

Always excited to have Jedd in the band. I have been wanting him in the set-up for years. I am a big fan of Ard and have never shared a stage with him, so I think that would be lekker.

Every year the group covers many famous songs, if it is not too much of a secret, can you share one or two of tracks that you guys are performing this year or even artists you are covering?

I can tell you what I am doing. I am doing a Black Sabbath and a Metallica tune! This is the first time we are doing a Metallica tune in the four years. Can’t believe it!

Oh wow! Cool! So, will the group record a new song or anthem this year? If so, what can we expect?

Yeah, a new song has been recorded and written by my good friend, Hunter Kennedy. He has also been part of the BB set-up in the past.

What song can we listen to in preparation for the show and to get us hyped up? Please share a link!

Lastly, what’s in store for the rest of the year and 2019?

I am working on a secret project that will launch on the 8th of October. My Francois van Coke en Vriende show. I have also started writing songs for my next solo album that will be released sometime in 2019.
