DJ Lag to Perform at Maribou State Live in South Africa

Maribou State is coming to Cape Town and Johannesburg in December (win tickets here), and the organisers have announced that a some of our own top local artists will perform alongside the duo. One of the local acts, is DJ Lag, an electronic music artist who is currently making huge waves in the industry.

I caught up with him to find out more about his current projects and his thoughts on Maribou State.

Hi! Thanks for the chat. It looks like it has been quite the year for you so far, with a track for a Woolworths campaign and being nominated for the SA DJ Awards. What have been your personal highlights?

It’s been a really good year for me… I’ve been traveling to many cities performing and pushing the sound of Durban. Finally this year I went to New York, and being nominated for the SA DJ awards just made my tear!

That’s amazing! And congratulations. You are also finishing your world tour. Tell me about travelling to all those amazing places, and what has been your favourite country and show respectively?

New York was the best time for me, I always wanted to go there. Playing my second Boiler Room and RADAR’S 3rd birthday in London was also a highlight.

And then something I am very interested in; you released your new EP on WhatsApp… how did that work and why did you decide to do that?

I was bringing back the old way we use to distribute our music we use to send to friends on WhatsApp and Whatsapp groups. It was for the people, the true fans.

So, how do you ensure that you constantly push the boundaries of electronic music, a rapidly growing genre, in South Africa?

I’m just always releasing music. It’s important to push your sound constantly. Sometimes I give out music for free because it’s what the people want.

You will be performing at Maribou State’s shows? Are you fan and, if so, what is it that you like about the duo’s sound?

I’m a new fan. The grooves and sounds are interesting. We’re gonna have a great show.

What can we look forward to from your performance at the show?

A proper gqom education and lots of dancing.

Besides the upcoming show, what are you currently working on?

I’m also gonna be releasing another E.P early next year under GOON CLUB ALL STARS.
