A quick chat with Nina Hastie
Nina Hastie at Mieliepop 2018
Pack your bags, because from the 21-24 March 2018 the Republic of Mieliepop will be your home. This year Mieliepop Festival offers a laid back 4-day musical experience with over 90 acts performing on 6 different stages, catering for a wide variety of tastes.
This year, actress and comedian Nina Hastie is part of the line up! I had quick chat with her:
I just read your new article on W24 – great work! What do you, as a celebrity, hope to bring to the women of South Africa through this platform?
I would like women to know that their voice matters, they don’t have to just talk about women’s issues. They can talk about anything. They’re free.
What comes first for you, comedian or actress?
Comedian. A lot of people can act. Not everyone can comede. It’s hard.
You’ve been in the industry since 1996 (at a very young age), what do you think does it take to stay relevant after so many years?
Just be authentic and keep growing and reading and understanding and unpacking the zeitgeist of information around you.
What inspires your material for performances?
Experience. I try to live. See things and people and places. Watch people. Think about them laugh at situations. Live in the obscure land.
What makes YOU laugh?
People tripping and falling.
Now let’s talk Mieliepop! Have you ever been to Mieliepop before? If so, what’s your favourite memory? If not, what are you most looking forward to?
I’ve been dying to go. I used to be a festival junky then they all got so crowded. I want a nice experience with live music so i can consume all the live acts without getting dusty.
And what do you think makes Mieliepop so special making people go back year after year? Anyone else on the line up that you are excited to see?
Boo! Bombshelter Beast! Blackcat Bones. I’ve been following all these group from their various inceptions. I used to sneak out and watch Boo in high school. I used to work at Nile Crocodile in Pretoria with the frontman of Blackcat Bones, and I am friends with the vocalist of Bombshelter beast and remember how excited he was to form such an exciting colab.
Ah Awesome! So, what are you preparing for the crowds to keep them happy and keen?
Jokes, that’s my job.
Finally, what’s your plans for the rest of 2018?
Write a book. Buy a house. Find a boyfriend.
