A Road Trip Around Coastal Towns

Cape Town is an amazing city. If you’ve ever stayed here for even just a few days, you’ll know that it has a special kind of magic. But have you ever been on a road trip around Cape Town, to the little towns and areas around the coast? You may think that you need a whole holiday to explore this, but the best part of it? You can do it in just 24 hours! Here are a few of my favourites, that you can’t skip – Even if you have to do this trip over 2 days!

Scarborough

Scarborough is a special little coastal town just under an hour’s drive from the Mother City. It is a beautiful little place that is better described as a community. There are no massive malls, hotels or busy roads, simply the amazing scenery – The ocean and the hills. There are 2 or 3 eateries where you can have breakfast or lunch, but you can also pack your own, and have a beautiful picnic on the beach! Scarborough beach is also perfect for swimming and surfing.

Simon’s Town

Simon’s Town is a picturesque town situated on the shores of False Bay. It is also home to the South African Navy. Here you can visit the Navy Museum or drive a few kilometres to Boulders Beach – Famous for their colony of penguins (you can swim with them as well if you are brave enough to face the cold water!). Otherwise the town has a few beautiful little restaurants and coffee shops, as well as amazing picnic spots.

Kommetjie

Kommetjie is a popular spot for surfers – All locals know this. But it is also an amazing, buzzing seaside village with a few tiny shops and restaurants where you can grab a beer with some of the locals. Kommetjie is nestled between Slangkop Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas in Cape Town, and the town’s Long Beach is over 5 km – If you’re like me, this means pure paradise!

Hout Bay & Chapmans Peak

You won’t easily get more beautiful views than on Chapmans Peak, or Chappies as the locals call it). Chapman’s Peak Drive winds its way between Noordhoek and Hout Bay on the Atlantic Coast on the south-western tip of South Africa. For just a few rand at the toll gate, you can experience one of the most spectacular marine drives in the world.

Hout Bay is a bigger town (well bigger than the two I’ve already mentioned), and it really is a must if you’ve never been here. With a range of top-class restaurants, a popular market and harbour, you might want to set a good couple of hours out to spend at Hout Bay.

You can buy fresh fish at the harbour for a braai, and get unique home-made items at the market. And nothing beats a drink on the deck of the Mariner’s Wharf (make a mental note of this!).

Fish Hoek

Fish Hoek is a town at the eastern-end of the Fish Hoek Valley on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula, and boasts one of the safest swimming beaches in Cape Town. The town is also home to the Fish Hoek Valley museum, great hiking spots and a Stone Age Cave site where the remains of the now famous 12 000 year-old Fish Hoek Man were discovered (now you really want to go, I know!).

After your trip, do try and stay for the sunset – I promise it will be worth it. Make sure you are on the west-side of the mountains to get the best view. There are plenty of safe parking space along the Misty Cliffs road (find it on the map here: Misty Cliffs)
