Akkedis Album Launch (Café Roux)

Akkedis Band

South African Music – Akkedis Band – Onder Ou Tafelberg

Growing up, I often heard my dad spoke about “Akkedis band”, “Piet Botha”, “Jack Hammer” and “The Lyzyrd Kings”. I didn’t really pay much attention back then, but thank the good gods I discovered Akkedis (and Piet Botha!) a year or two ago at Up the Creek Festival. I then realised that it was exactly this music that I so longed for when I was studying in Stellenbosch, and later moved to a flat at the foot of Table Mountain.

This Afrikaans groove rock band had their sixth album (fittingly called Onder Ou Tafelberg) launch at Café Roux a week or two ago. On an icy winter’s night, we drove to Noordhoek for the show. Café  Roux is a beautiful venue a short drive from Cape Town’s CBD. Here you can have a delicious dinner and watch some of your favourite bands in the comfort of a cosy restaurant/bar.

The band was chatting to guests before the show and handing out albums to everyone. These guys are veterans of the Afrikaans blues-rock scene; they know everyone, and they’ve toured South Africa from North to South.

Brothers, Rudolph and Arthur Dennis, and Adrian John Graham took to the stage after dinner in the most casual way to start their set – Experienced musicians, icons. They then took us on a beautiful journey through Cape Town, District Six, Mozambique and the rest of Africa. It’s like having red wine around a table with old friends, listening to stories – Old and new. It was a perfect evening – Good wine, good company and incredible music.

On the way home I listened to the album, it’s like watching the show all over again. The album is a piece of gold; 11 tracks consisting of a mix of beautiful acoustic melodies, blues, and heavier rock ‘n roll.

As the city lights appeared in the cold night, I thought to myself: I wish I knew this band earlier, so I could’ve listened to them longer by now…
