An Interview with Chico Muya

The Stellenbosch Craft Beer Festival, held at the Jan Marais Nature Reserve, is around the corner (14 October 2017). This music and beer festival promises to be a fun-filled day of great beer, top local music and some of the best food trucks around (get tickets here).

I had a quick chat with Chico Muya, one of the artists on the line up about the festival and a few other things. Here’s what he said:

Hi Chico, thanks for chatting to DPC! Please tell my readers a bit about yourself and bassist, Spencer-Rae; where are you from and when did you start making music, etc.?

Greetings! Thank you for having me on the blog. Until quite recently, Durban has always been my home. I decided that it was time for the Western Cape to hear my music. So, about 4 months ago, I bought a one way ticket to Cape Town, and I haven’t looked back since.

I’ve been performing for the last 4/5 years (full-time). I have 2 older brothers who are incredibly talented musically. So growing up, I was always surrounded by music. I guess you could say that it rubbed off on me. I’ve always loved music, and I loved playing the guitar. Having said that, I only decided to take music seriously about 2/3 years after I matriculated.

I had already been performing (all over KZN) for about 2 years or so, when Spencer started performing with me.

Awesome, so you started off as a solo artist, but partnered with Spencer-Rae, what new sound and dimension did this bring to your music?

Performing with someone always adds a new dimension to a performance. When performing alone, any mistake you make can be clearly heard,so it can be a little daunting for a lot of people. You have to develop a strong stage presence, or else you will lose your audience.

Having Spencer in the mix was a breath of fresh air. I could be a little more relaxed on stage. The bass guitar adds so much groove and body to my sound. Spencer is really good at coming up with grooves that fit so well. Now that I’m in Cape Town, however, I’ve had to go back to my solo performance for the majority of my shows. It’s still an absolute blast!

I’ve read that musicians such as Ed Sheeran, George Ezra and Labryinth inspire you. What is it about these artists that you look up to?

All three of those artist are unique. They know what they’re good at, and they stick to that.

Ed Sheeran is an incredible performer. He stands on stage, armed with nothing but a guitar, a loop pedal and a mic, and he’s able to entertain a stadium of people. George Ezra has a powerful voice. When he sings, his voice literally vibrates your bones. Labryinth is just so diverse, and all his songs are so different!

What are your plans for the near future? Any albums or tours coming up?

I released an album (about 7 months ago), while I was still in Durban, called: Love And Other Things. I’m looking at the possibility of relaunching it here in the Western Cape. I’ve also got my eyes set on doing a tour through Gauteng in the 3 months. I’m also hoping to shoot a music video for my single (What Love Is). I’m not in a rush though. I have my eyes and ears open for a talented videographer.

The Stellenbosch Craft Beer Festival is coming up and you will be there, besides all the beer, what can we look forward to at the festival?

Besides all the beer, you can also look forward to good food and comedy! I’ve actually never been to a music festival where comedy is added onto the line up, so I’m really excited for that! Laughter is good for the soul.

What time can we catch your set, and what can festival-goers expect from your performance at the event?

You can expect a head-nodding, body-moving, hand-clapping performance from me. I’m all about the vibe; connecting with the audience in a way that only music can orchestrate. I’m yet to find out what time my performance will be. You’ll just have to keep your eyes on the Festival page for updates.

Cool! So, who else can we look forward to on the line up?

Opposite The Other are an incredible band. I’ve never met them, but I’ve heard only good stuff! I’m really looking forward to their performance! I also stalked a band (on the line up) called: Spoegwolf. They’re on fire! It’s going to be a good time for sure.
